Gunnarsholt is named after Gunnar Baugsson, Gunnar in Hlíðarendi 's grandfather who lived there according to Landnámsbók. The farm, which used to be a large farm, stands on the edge of Hekluhraun (lava of Hekla). In the early 19th century, the town had to be moved due to a sandstorm, and the land was completely deserted in 1925.
A year later, sand planting began and now everything is green with industry where there was only waste. The land is state property. The state's sand reclamation headquarters has been there for decades. There is forestry experimental activities with various plants and grasses, seed coating, and a seed collection center, mainly for distribution from airplanes in the past, but now equipment on the ground handles sowing and fertilizer distribution.
A hay pellet factory was operated where seed coating is now. The country's first beef farm was there. A stallion farm was run at Gunnarsholt but was closed in 2003. On the land is Akurhóll,which was an asylum for alcoholics. Its operation were closed on 1st Oct. 2003.
