Geocache Description:

This cache is being placed for the Cache Acroos Maryland 2024 Picnic.

An awesome and imposing structure set amidst eye-pleasing natural beauty, the LeGore five-arch stone bridge is 248’ long, 50’ high and manages a 21’ (two lanes) road deck between 4’ parapets. Load limit is 12 tons.

Built by James W. LeGore in the late 1800’s, this bridge spans the Monocacy River in northern Frederick County, Maryland. Commercially significant when built, it connected the New Midway, Woodsboro, and Legore Quarry area on the south with the Thurmont and Rocky Ridge area to the north.

Today newer roads and bridges in the area have reduced bridge traffic to a local trickle, making this a place of scenic solitude. Over the years, however, both approaches to the bridge have been used as a dumping ground for all manner of human refuse. If ever there was a scenic site in dire need of an extended, working CITO event, this is it. I wonder if the County would be willing to provide haul-away trucks and a hoist if offered free labor. This would truly be an ecological labor of love, perhaps requiring more than one weekend and a score of bodies. Just a thought, for this is a magnificent rural spot that is unsullied except for the refuse.

The LeGore cache contains a log sheet only. Bring along a pen or pencil. Its placement and cohesion rely upon the attraction of opposites.

Though this is not a well-traveled bridge, exercise caution and be alert to traffic when walking over and taking photos on and about the bridge.
