Inspiration for the company came from Lucille King in the 1920s. King was a former educator who worked for the John Schroeder Lumber Company in Milwaukee, WI. She crafted ideas for wooden toys for use in classrooms and thought toys should encourage learning. After presenting the idea to the company, she started the Playskool Institute in 1928. It became Playskool, Inc., a division of the lumber company in 1938.
The company was acquired by Milton Bradley in 1968 and later by Hasbro in 1984. Hasbro then purchased Tonka and Kenner Products, introducing several iconic toys to the brand, and shifted the design considerably, introducing plastic toys.
The Playskool brand is current, and the toys are still made to encourage learning through play. Some of the most popular toys include Mr. Potato Head, Play-Doh, Teddy Ruxpin, and popular children’s television programming toys, such as Sesame Street and Barney.
The Playskool Postal Station is believed to be from the 1970s.
