Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Black Swallowtail)

The Black Swallowtail, scientifically known as Papilio polyxenes, is a striking butterfly species found across North America. These elegant insects are commonly spotted in various habitats, including open fields, meadows, gardens, and forest edges. They have a wide distribution range, from Canada to Mexico, and are particularly abundant in regions with ample nectar sources and host plants. With their distinctive black wings accented by striking yellow markings and rows of blue and orange spots, Black Swallowtails are a captivating sight in the wild.
The lifecycle of the Black Swallowtail begins with the female laying eggs on host plants such as members of the carrot family, including parsley, dill, and fennel. Upon hatching, the larvae, commonly known as caterpillars, feed voraciously on the leaves of these plants. As they grow, the caterpillars undergo several molts, shedding their old exoskeletons to accommodate their increasing size. After completing their larval stage, the caterpillars form chrysalises, where they undergo metamorphosis into adult butterflies. Once emerged, the Black Swallowtail adults engage in nectar feeding and mating activities, continuing the cycle of life. Their presence not only adds beauty to their habitats but also plays a crucial role in pollination and ecosystem health.
