Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Cicadas)

Cicadas are intriguing insects known for their distinctive buzzing calls and periodic emergence in vast numbers, particularly in temperate regions worldwide. These remarkable creatures inhabit a variety of habitats, ranging from forests and grasslands to urban areas with trees. They spend the majority of their lives underground as nymphs, where they feed on sap from tree roots. The periodical cicadas, like those belonging to the genus Magicicada, are famous for their synchronized emergences, which occur every 13 or 17 years, depending on the species. These emergences often result in swarms of cicadas emerging en masse, creating a spectacle that captures the attention of humans and other creatures alike.
The lifecycle of cicadas is divided into three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. After a period of feeding underground, cicada nymphs emerge from the soil, typically at night, to molt into their winged adult form. Once above ground, the adult cicadas engage in mating rituals, with males producing their characteristic buzzing calls to attract females. After mating, females lay eggs in tree branches, and upon hatching, the newly hatched nymphs fall to the ground and burrow into the soil to begin the cycle anew. Despite their relatively short adult lifespan, cicadas leave a lasting impact on their ecosystems, influencing nutrient cycling, predator-prey dynamics, and even the cultural landscape through their periodic emergences.
