Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Dark Fishing Spider)

The Dark Fishing Spider, scientifically known as Dolomedes tenebrosus, is a formidable arachnid native to North America, commonly found near bodies of water such as streams, ponds, and marshes. These spiders prefer habitats with ample vegetation and a readily available supply of prey, which they capture by ambushing or actively hunting. With their dark brown or black coloration and robust bodies, Dark Fishing Spiders are well-camouflaged against the bark of trees or among foliage, allowing them to remain concealed while they wait for unsuspecting prey to approach.
The lifecycle of the Dark Fishing Spider begins with the female laying her eggs in a silken sac, which she attaches to vegetation near the water's edge. After hatching, the spiderlings undergo several molts as they grow, eventually dispersing to establish their territories. Dark Fishing Spiders are skilled hunters, using their keen eyesight and sensitive leg hairs to detect vibrations on the water's surface, signaling the presence of potential prey. They are capable of walking on water and diving below its surface to capture aquatic insects, tadpoles, and even small fish. Throughout their lives, Dark Fishing Spiders play a vital role in controlling insect populations near water bodies, contributing to the delicate balance of their ecosystems.
