Ferromolybdenum is an important iron-molybdenum metal alloy, with a molybdenum content of 60–75%. It is the main source for molybdenum alloying of High-Strength Low-Alloy steel.
Ferromolybdenum is used for making alloy steel suitable for mining & refinery, military hardware, rotary drills & load bearing parts. FeMo is also used in stainless, heat-resisting steel & tool steel.
Ferromolybdenum can be purified by electron beam melting. For alloying with steel the ferromolybdenum is added to molten steel before casting. A large ferromolybdenum producer in the US is Langeloth Metallurgical Company in Langeloth, Pennsylvania.
