Clacton Pier was opened on July 18th 1871, and on that day, the first steam ship berthed on the landing stage to disembark visitors. Since then the pier has undergone may changes, and by the 1920's it was used more as a pleasure pier with attractions and entertainments, with most tourists arriving by train.
The 1970's saw the beginning of a decline, though in the last decade or so there has been much investment and improvements.
