Fort Bliss, situated in El Paso, Texas, is one of the largest and oldest military installations in the United States. Established in 1848, it was initially known as "Post Opposite El Paso del Norte" and served as a cavalry post to protect settlers and travelers along the Rio Grande. Over the years, Fort Bliss evolved into a significant Army installation, playing crucial roles in various military operations, including the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. Its strategic location along the U.S.-Mexico border has made it a key hub for training, testing, and deploying military personnel and equipment.

During the 20th century, Fort Bliss expanded significantly, particularly during World War II, when it became a major training center for anti-aircraft artillery units. In the following decades, it continued to modernize and adapt to changing military needs, becoming a center for missile testing and development. Today, Fort Bliss is home to the 1st Armored Division and serves as a vital component of the U.S. Army's readiness and defense capabilities.

Beyond its military functions, Fort Bliss contributes to the local community through economic activity and support services. Its presence has a significant impact on the region's economy, providing employment opportunities and contracting with local businesses. Additionally, the installation offers various recreational and educational amenities for military personnel and their families, including schools, healthcare facilities, and leisure activities. As a cornerstone of the El Paso area, Fort Bliss remains an integral part of both military and civilian life in the region.

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
