In 2000 a Swiss foundation launched a campaign to determine the New Seven Wonders of the World. Given that the Original Wonders list was compiled in the second century BCE--and that only one of them was still standing (the Pyramids of Giza)--it seemed time for an update. The final results were announced in 2007.
Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ on the summit of Mount Corcovado, Rio De Janeiro, in southeastern Brazil. The statue is based on designs by Heitor da Silva Costa, Carlos Oswald, and Paul Landowski. It is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world.

The statue was completed in 1931, and it stands 98 feet tall with outstretched arms spanning 92 feet. It is made of reinforced concrete and covered with thousands of soapstone tiles. It sits on a square stone pedestal base about 26 feet high. Escalators and panoramic elevators were added in 2002. Previously, tourists had to climb 200 steps to reach the statue. In 2006, to mark the statue’s 75th anniversary, a chapel was constructed at the base.
