Geocache Description:

As a U.S. Army Veteran I decided to create an American Flag Series this is #1 of many to come.

"Old Glory" is one of the most cherished nicknames for the American flag. The origin of this name traces back to a specific story involving Captain William Driver, a 19th-century American sea captain from Salem, Massachusetts.

### The Origin of "Old Glory"

- **Captain William Driver**: In 1824, at the age of 21, Captain Driver received a particularly large and beautiful American flag from his mother and a group of local women. The flag was about 10 feet by 17 feet, which was quite large for the time.
- **Naming the Flag**: Captain Driver was so moved by the gift and its significance that he named the flag "Old Glory." He carried this flag with him during his numerous sea voyages, and it accompanied him through many adventures and dangers, becoming a symbol of pride and patriotism.

### The Civil War and Preservation of Old Glory

- **Relocation to Tennessee**: In 1837, Driver retired from the sea and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, bringing Old Glory with him. By the time of the Civil War, Nashville had become a divided city with Union and Confederate sympathizers.
- **Hiding the Flag**: When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Driver feared for the safety of his cherished flag. He had the flag sewn inside a comforter to conceal it from Confederate forces.
- **Display of Old Glory**: When Union forces recaptured Nashville in 1862, Driver proudly displayed Old Glory from a flagpole, an event that reportedly brought tears to the soldiers' eyes. This act of defiance and loyalty made the flag a powerful symbol of the Union cause.

### Legacy and Recognition

- **Public Recognition**: The story of Old Glory and Captain Driver's dedication became widely known, solidifying the nickname "Old Glory" as a term of endearment for the American flag.
- **Smithsonian Institution**: After Captain Driver’s death, his family donated the original Old Glory to the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains a preserved artifact of American history.

### Significance

Old Glory is not just a piece of fabric but a representation of the enduring spirit and patriotism of the United States. Captain Driver’s story highlights the personal and national significance of the flag, embodying the resilience and unity of the nation through challenging times.

This story has ensured that the nickname "Old Glory" endures as a beloved term for the American flag, symbolizing freedom, sacrifice, and national pride.
