Għar il-Kbir (Literally: "The big cave") is a complex of caves in Dingli, Malta.
The general structure of the cave system has eight interconnecting caves spread across two levels and is quite impressive. The curious caves started as a housing system and it is commonly believed that several families of troglodytes inhabited the caves until 1835. The natural cave formation was long ago enlarged by its inhabitants and the craftsmanship was such that it can be visited up until current days. The caves are below ground and with the surrounding undergrowth they are easily missed.
If you park at Parking 1, take the footpath and not the main road as may be suggested by GPS. You will then first walk by the neighboring cache - The Ring of Clapham Junction (not mine), where there are the longest cart ruts in Malta. This is the oldest cache in Malta and it entitles you to TWO Geotrophy badges upon completion.
Għar il-Kbir is at a hiking distance from Dingli Cliffs. You can also park at Parking 2. A little more tricky and terrain a bit harder in my opinion, after trying both ways.
Cache is not in the caves because it would be too near to the other cache. You will have to pass by the top of the caves to go to the cache. Be careful at the edges when you go round them. Walk down and make sure you visit them while you are there. They are very interesting.
Open the cache slowly so you don't 'disturb' the 'animals'.
Close the lid well when ready. Please leave it in its original hiding place. If for any reason, you think it is better to move it, kindly let me know and I will do so myself.
Photos of the cache will be greatly appreciated so I know that it is in the same condition that I left it in.
Good to leave TBs in.
Congratulations to BlackTrek for being FTF.
