I love eclipses. I traveled to see the total solar eclipses on August 21, 2017 (in Hendersonville, Tennessee) and April 8, 2024 (in Jamestown, New York). I plan to continue being an eclipse chaser and see as many I can during my life. (Fun fact: a word for an eclipse chaser is umbraphile, meaning "shadow lover.") This cache was inspired by my love of eclipses.
The cache is hidden in a small park in Wrightsville. The cache name is the date of the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from this location. The eclipse of October 26, 2144 will have a path of totality that stretches from western Canada to the eastern United States and ends over the Atlantic Ocean. In Wrightsville, the partial eclipse will begin just 4 seconds after the stroke of noon. It will become total at 1:20:01pm, and totality will last for 2 minutes and 24 seconds. The partial eclipse will end at 2:41:42pm.
Major cities in the path of totality will be Philadelphia (which will experience 3 minutes, 41 seconds of totality), New York City (3 minutes, 39 seconds), and Toronto (2 minutes, 38 seconds). Washington, D.C. will experience a partial eclipse, with 98.4% totality.
Visit NASA's eclipse site to see when other eclipses are coming up and where they'll be visible. I think everyone should try to see at least one in their life!
If you've ever had the experience of witnessing an eclipse I'd love to hear about it in your log. Not required of course, but I'm very interested in hearing your eclipse stories if you have any!
