Fortino San Pietro - Civitavecchia (RM)

Fortino di San Pietro, situated in the picturesque city of Portoferraio on the island of Elba, Italy, stands as a testament to centuries of military history and strategic significance. Built during the 16th century under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the fort served as a crucial defensive bastion against maritime threats, guarding the island's shores with its imposing presence. Its strategic location in the Tyrrhenian Sea made it a key stronghold in the region, offering protection to the city and its inhabitants from potential invasions.

During the Napoleonic era, Fortino San Pietro gained renewed attention when Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the island of Elba in 1814. Portoferraio became his residence, and the fort played a pivotal role in securing his presence on the island. Today, visitors to Fortino San Pietro can explore its well-preserved ramparts, bastions, and interior spaces, gaining insights into its military architecture and historical significance. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the charming town of Portoferraio, providing a captivating journey through the island's past and present.

As one of the prominent landmarks on Elba Island, Fortino San Pietro continues to attract tourists and history enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into Italy's rich cultural heritage and maritime history. Its rugged beauty and historical importance make it a must-visit destination for those seeking to delve into the stories of conquest, resilience, and survival that have shaped the island and its people over the centuries.

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
