🇬🇧 I found an interesting place near the border, where trams used to run many years ago. This is Oude Trambaan.
The short story:
In Rijsbergen, the tram station used to be located in the current café de Zwaan, at that time Tram station Rijsbergen. Seen from Rijsbergen, the Old Tramway starts at the intersection of Kruispad Overasebaan and Breedschotsestraat. The Oude Trambaan then runs as a separate cycle path through the fields and ends at the Hazeldonksestraat. The Oude Trambaan is interrupted by the HSL and the motorway, but continues on Breda territory as a wide asphalt cycle path and connects to the Oude Tramweg under the municipality of Hoogstraten. Finally, in Meersel-Dreef we find an impressive tram station. The inscription Meersel can still be read. The former café De Statie, on the corner of the Oude Tramweg and the Dreef, is now called café De Dreef. The Old Tramway continues to the river Mark. Here is an imposing steel tram bridge. Unfortunately, the rest of the former tram line is closed.
🇳🇱 Ik vond een interessante plek vlakbij de grens, waar vele jaren geleden trams reden. Dit is de Oude Trambaan.
Het korte verhaal:
In Rijsbergen was het tramstation voorheen gevestigd in het huidige café de Zwaan, in die tijd Tramstation Rijsbergen. Vanuit Rijsbergen gezien begint de Oude Trambaan op de kruising Kruispad Overasebaan Breedschotsestraat. De Oude Trambaan loopt daarna als een vrijliggend fietspad door de velden en eindigt bij de Hazeldonksestraat. De Oude Trambaan wordt onderbroken door de HSL en de autoweg, maar loopt op Bredaas grondgebied verder als een breed asfaltfietspad en sluit aan op de Oude Tramweg onder de gemeente Hoogstraten. In Meersel-Dreef tenslotte vinden we een imposant tramstation. Het opschrift Meersel is nog te lezen. Het vroegere café De Statie, op het hoek van de Oude Tramweg en de Dreef, heet nu café De Dreef. De Oude Tramweg loopt verder door naar de rivier de Mark. Hier ligt een imposante stalen trambrug. De rest van de voormalige tramlijn is helaas afgesloten.
