Botanikos sode augalų kolekcijos pradėtos kaupti nuo 1921, tačiau jau seniau šioje įsikūrę jėzuitai augino turtingą kolekciją vaistažolių, kurios buvo naudojamos tuometinėje farmacijoje. Šiuo metu sode galima pamatyti daugiau kaip 2000 skirtingų žolinių augalų, 206 skirtingų rožių, 245 medžių ir krūmų rūšių, aptinkamų skirtingose pasaulio vietovėse.
Vilniaus universiteto botanikos sodo Vingio skyrius: Istorija siekia XVI a., kai dabartinio skyriaus teritorijoje Radvilos įkūrė vieną pirmųjų Lietuvos reformatų mokyklų. Vėliau teritorijoje įsikūrė jėzuitai, kurie šioje teritorijoje tarp visų kitų augalų augino plačiai naudojamas tuometinėje farmacijoje vaistažoles. Vingio rūmai minimi ir L. Tolstojaus romane „Karas ir taika“. Sodo plotas 7,5 ha.
