ABOUT THIS SERIES: I have been approved by Antelope Island State Park to place 14 caches along the East Side Road and the South Island Trail. This Is SECOND placement of the series. If you wait for all of them to be posted, a single day trip should get you a bunch of smileys. If you go after each FTF, you will become very acquainted with this bumpy dirt road over the course of the next few months! (You may also want a Utah State Park Pass- each trip to the Island will cost you $15)
Antelope Island State Park (AISP) is well known for a number of outdoor activities from hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding to geocaching, kayaking and BIRDWATCHING! People come from all over the world to take pictures of birds that visit the island during migration. Utah is also home to a number of birds that also favor AISP. In an effort to help geocachers relate to the bird watchers we might run into, I created this series to learn some of their lingo.
Did you know birders rarely use the term FLOCK? A flock of birds is a general term for a group of different birds mixed together. If you saw a bunch of Gulls swimming with Ducks and Geese, you could correctly say there is a flock of waterfowl. But as we all know "Birds of a feather flock together" so most birds have a name for their bird families. For instance, what we might call a flock of Magpies is actually a
Congregation of Magpies
Some other correct names for bird groups are:
A Pride of Peacocks
A Nye of Pheasants
Enjoying finding this cache and look forward to more correct terms of bird groups soon.
THIS CACHE WILL NOT BE ACCESSIBLE BY VEHICLE DURING THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING ROAD CLOSURE! (see waypoint)
