Schwindegg ist erst durch die Bahn "groß" geworden. Viele Pendler fahren von hier täglich nach München. Inzwischen hat die Gemeinde fast schon den Charakter eines Vororts dieser Großstadt, dauert die Fahrt doch nur 40 Minuten bis zum Ostbahnhof. Die Bahnlinie hatte aber eine weit darüber hinausgehende Bedeutung. Anfangs war sie ein wichtiger Teil der großen europäischen Fernverbindungen. Im 19. Jahrhundert fuhr hier sogar der Orientexpress von Paris nach Konstantinopel (Istanbul) durch. Seit vielen Jahren gibt es konkrete Pläne, die Strecke auszubauen und wieder an den europäischen Fernverkehr anzuschließen. Ob daraus jemals etwas wird?
Ein Tipp für Eisenbahnenthusiasten: Seht Euch unbedingt das Stellwerk an (an der Nordseite des Bahnhofs, man kann durch die Fenster hineinblicken). Das mechanische Stellwerk ist seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts nahezu unverändert in Betrieb. In Wikipedia gibt es einen sehr interessanten Artikel zu dieser Bahnlinie.
Der Cache liegt nicht am Bahnhof, aber in Sichtweite.

Im östlichen Oberbayern liegt ein touristisch nahezu unberührtes landschaftliches und ökologisches Kleinod: das Isental. Der gleichnamige Kleinfluss schlängelt sich in west-östlicher Richtung zwischen den oberbayerischen Endmoränen im Süden und dem tertiären Hügelland im Norden. Seine noch zahlreich vorhandenen Feuchtwiesen sind eines von Deutschlands wichtigsten Wiesenbrüter-Schutzgebieten. Das trifft besonders für das Tal zwischen Dorfen und Schwindegg zu. Durchgehende Straßen, markierte Rad- oder Wanderwege gibt es hier nicht. Nur die Bahnlinie München – Mühldorf führt am Südrand entlang. Trotzdem kann man die rund 10 km lange Strecke sehr gut zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad zurücklegen. Aus München oder Mühldorf könnt Ihr bequem mit dem Zug anreisen. An den Bahnhöfen Dorfen und Schwindegg stehen aber auch genügend Parkplätze zur Verfügung. In welcher Richtung Ihr die Strecke zurücklegt, ist egal. Ihr könnt immer an einem der beiden Bahnhöfe beginnen und vom anderen mit dem Zug zurückfahren. Fahrräder werden mitgenommen. Die Züge verkehren mindestens stündlich, auch am Wochenende.
Wichtig: Die Route führt weitgehend durch oder entlang eines Wiesenbrüter-Schutzgebiets. Bitte beachtet unbedingt die hier herrschenden Regeln: Auf den Wegen bleiben und Hunde an die Leine! Ein Teil der Wege darf zwischen 15. März und 15. Juli nicht betreten werden. Die Listings der dort liegenden Cache sind in dieser Zeit deaktiviert.
Es herrscht weitgehend ein Fahrverbot für Kraftfahrzeuge. Einzelne Caches sind mit dem Auto oder Motorrad erreichbar. Das ist bei den Attributen vermerkt.

Schwindegg only became “big” thanks to the railway. Many commuters travel from here to Munich every day. The community now almost has the character of a suburb of this big city, as the journey to the Munich East station only takes 40 minutes. But the railway line had a significance that went far beyond that. Initially it was an important part of the major European long-distance connections. In the 19th century, the Orient Express from Paris to Constantinople (Istanbul) even passed through here. There have been concrete plans to expand the route and reconnect it to European long-distance traffic for many years. Will anything ever come of it?
A tip for railway enthusiasts: Be sure to check out the signal box (on the north side of the station, you can see in through the windows). The mechanical signal box has been in operation almost unchanged since the beginning of the 20th century.

In eastern Upper Bavaria lies a scenic and ecological gem that is almost untouched by tourists: the Isen Valley. The small river of the same name meanders in a west-east direction between the Upper Bavarian terminal moraines in the south and the tertiary hills in the north. Its numerous wet meadows are still one of Germany's most important protected areas for meadow breeding birds. This is particularly true in the valley between Dorfen and Schwindegg. There are no continuous streets or marked cycling or hiking trails here. Only the Munich – Mühldorf railway line runs along the southern edge. Nevertheless, the approximately 10 km long route can easily be covered on foot or by bike. You can easily travel by train from Munich or Mühldorf. There are also enough parking spaces available at the train stations of Dorfen and Schwindegg. It doesn't matter which direction you travel the route. You can always start at one of the two train stations and easily return by train from the other. Bicycles are taken along. Trains run at least every hour, including on weekends.
Important: The route largely leads through or along a meadow breeding reserve. Please be sure to follow the rules here: stay on the paths and keep dogs on a leash! Some of the trails are not accessible between March 15 and July 15. The listings of the caches located there are deactivated during this time.
There is largely a driving ban on motor vehicles. Individual caches can be reached by car or motorcycle. This is noted in the attributes.
