This creek empties into the river. You may be lucky enough to see carp or feel them bang into your kayak. Many birds enjoy this area including egret, heron, birds of prey and water fowl.
The Otonabee River was here long before Champlain and the explorers who became inhabitants of the area. The wildlife along the river is numerous. When we are on the river early in the day, before the motorized vessels, we often see wildlife.
We have been lucky enough to see Osprey, Eagles, Loons, many Heron, Heron Rookeries, Vultures, King Birds and King Fishers and Egrets as well as many types of smaller birds and the ever present geese. We have been lucky enough to see mink, beaver otters, muskrats, a fisher, deer and a couple times, deer swimming across the river. Often seen, are large snapping turtles swimming and Northern Map turtles and Painted Turtles sunning. In the Spring when the water is very clear, Muskie, Pickerel (Walleye), Bass, Pike and Carp can be seen below if you wear polarized sunglasses.
You may need a short reaching stick to pull down some of these caches in times of low water.
The best paddling is during the week when motorboats and jet skis seem to be fewer. It is a good idea to move out from the shore and face into the waves when boats pass, to avoid being caught in the waves.
On many mornings you can paddle here without seeing another boat. The fishermen are often on the river during the week but on the weekend they multiply and after 10:30 a.m. the river becomes more lively with speedboats and large boats.
