'A R.i.p. Roaring Route' is a small traditonal cache hidden along the 'Bird to Gird' bike path along the Turnagain Arm.
The cache location provides the best panoramic view of the Turnagain Arm from the 'Bird to Gird' bike path. GZ is in the middle of an avalanche zone that see's frequent large avalanches which clears the trees and bushes to give you a clear view of the Arm.
From the nearby interpretive sign located 400 feet to the west ie toward Bird Point...
You are standing in the middle of an avalanche chute. Notice that no tress grow above you. Each winter snow roars down this slope with great force - blasting, tearing, ripping and burying everything on the way. That would include you if you were standing here at the wrong time.
I have visited GZ at all times of year and have had to crawl over 50 foot tall 300 foot wide piles of snow. Winter travel here happens but may not be the smartest thing to do. If you do decide to visit GZ note the status of the avalanche mitigation signs at the ends of the trail. If they are blinking red it means they will be lobbing artillery shells up on the slopes to bring down the snow in a 'controlled' enviroment!
Another simple hide along the bike path that uses some of the debris from a previous avalanche to hide the container.
Share your experiences and post a pic with your log!!! PLEASE!!!
