Welcome to the beginning of the Mutton Island walkway!
History of Mutton Island
At the end of the walkway lies Mutton Island. It got its name from sheep, which used to inhabit the island before the more recent wastewater treatment plant that sits there today. The lighthouse on the island's east side was built on the site of an old castle that existed in the 1600s.
The unique element of this lighthouse was that it was one of few to allow the keeper and their family to live there! The light in the lighthouse was extinguished for the last time on December 13th 1997
