The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is home to an abundance of native and non-native wildlife species that we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to experience. Their habitats range from backyard bird feeders which attract beautiful songbirds to majestic forests where big game can be seen wandering through. The opportunity to experince NL wildlife up close and personal may not be welcomed by all, especially not by those who have distinct phobias. Inspired by the cache called "Hypsiphobia" GCRJ16, this little series will introduce you to the irrational fear or aversion to some local wildlife that you probably didn't even realize were actual phobias.
SCIUROPHOBIA IS THE FEAR OF SQUIRRELS
The Red squirrel was introduced to the island in 1963 and are a common sight in almost every wooded area of the Province. As human presence provides squirrels with consistent food and shelter, they commonly nest in and around residential neighbourhoods but feed primarily on the seeds of conifer cones. These tree-dwelling mammals are active during the day and sleep at night and are active year-round. Instead of hibernating, they rely on sheltered dens in trees, fat reserves, and food caches to survive the cold weather.
This cache is also located in squirrel habitat so be on the lookout for them in the trees. If you encounter one, it's best not to offer up your human snacks to them because they have no trouble taking handouts rather than foraging for themselves.
