Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES, and involves a walk along  the mowed RED trail at Cedar Valley Retreat Center.  See below for directions and a colored map This is one of five new caches placed here for the 2024 West Bend $1,000 Cache Ba$h, with this one highlighting the indiginous peoples and great plains of the U.S.  PARKING is available the parking lot at  N43 28.120 W88 18.265 If you're not looking at the map, suggested route to find all five caches is to go north on the ORANGE trail from the parking lot, then west on the RED trail ("Turtlehead Trail"), which eventually swings south to the cache.  Total distance for all 5 new geocaches if following the map is approximately 1.6 miles round trip, with all 5 being just off the trails.  Along the way you'll pass numerous Native American-themed metal sculptures that acknowledge those who were here long before us.

This is also a letterbox hybrid cache, which is a type of geocache that can include both coordinates AND directions to get you to the final location. Follow the instructions in the following paragraphs to be directed to the actual cache location. Contents include a stamp (do not take) for letterboxing, as well as a log book and swag for geocachers and letterboxers.

YOUR ADVENTURE AWAITS

1. Begin at Birdhouse #4, located in the southwest part of the park at the posted coordinates of N43 28.040 W88 18.569. Head east along the trail, which will eventually curve southeast.

2. When you're about 400 feet from the starting coordinates you'll come to a sculpture depicting a Native American mode of transportation.  Have you ever been on one of these before?

3. At the sculpture go south about 105 feet to the bench, crossing the creek about half way.  If you look to the east you'll see an iconic covered bridge with a red roof.  You'll be visiting there for the next geocache after finding this one!

4. Continue onward as the trail swings west, then south, then east again.  Along the way you'll walk past, in order, Three Silent Braves sculpture (statue #5), birdhouse #5, and Indian Lore Sculpture (#12).  I wonder about the Indian Lore sculpture - perhaps the 4 images represent teepee, totem, thunderbird, and horse. What do you think?

5. Okay you're on the home stretch now.  From the Indian Lore statue #12, go exactly 235 feet east on the trail at a heading of 43 degrees and you'll come to sculpture #11, named "Indian Bow & Arrow" (if you reach birdhouse #6 you've gone too far).  Just 15 feet northwest of the statue you'll find the geocache, several feet off the ground hanging on a branch.  You're there!

NOW WHAT?

You're in for a treat!  The next cache, GCARDEA Covered Bridge is a simple field puzzle located at the previously mentioned covered bridge. You'll walk past more sculptures and even some Native American totem poles along the way.

We hope you enjoy your walk at Cedar Valley!
