Old Bogs Walk

The Old Bogs Walk in the Santuit Pond Preserve is a six stage mile plus stroll over some interesting and unexpected terrain above and around a half dozen old timey cranberry bogs that have reverted back to the small shallow ponds and swamps they once were. From the parking area, locate the trailhead by the information kiosk and then head north passing by what would be called a sinkhole in Florida. The land drops quite steeply nearly 100 feet to a small pond with a viewing bench. The well maintained trails take a gentler route to the listed coordinates where you'll find the first of five coordinate sets directing you to the final over a series of trails and old bog roads. Along the way you'll come across some of the infrastructure of the bogs that were once here, a couple of borrow pits, some steep and narrow cliffy sections and a long view of Santuit Pond. At the southern end of the Pond you'll cross the 21st century version of the herring count (solar powered electronic fish sensors do the tally now) and an interesting version of a native legend.
The cache was placed with the permission of the Barnstable Land Trust which stewarts the area and allows hunting in season, so remember your orange. Click the link above for more information and a trail map of the area. The terrain has more elevation changes than is usual for bog country on the Cape but the typical generous distribution of ticks, thorns and poison ivy, so dress appropriately and no whining ;-) If you enjoy the ramble, tell us about it in your log. Have fun.
