Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is one of many "Hikawa Shrines" in the 23 wards of Tokyo, but this Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is the most prestigious of them all, and is counted as one of the seven Hikawa Shrines of Edo, along with Azabu Hikawa Shrine, Shibuya Hikawa Shrine, and Hikawa Shrine, and is the first of these.
The current shrine building was built by order of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 8th shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and is designated as a tangible cultural property of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The shrine was highly respected by the Edo shogunate, and immediately after the shrine was relocated, Lord Yoshimune visited the shrine and received letters of red seal from successive shoguns up to the 14th shogun, Iemochi. Today, the shrine is well known as a quiet place to worship away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The annual festival held in September is an important event for the local people and attracts many visitors.
