Een oppikkertje, maar toch leuk. De eerste cache van Hurwenen.
De inwoners van Hurwenen (in de volksmond Hurne) worden 'Hurnsche Uilen' genoemd. Niet bepaald flatteus als je de uitleg erbij kent.
In het boek Schimpnamen in Gelderland staat het volgende:
"Zo staan de inwoners van Hurwenen ook wel bekend als Uilen. Niet omdat die vogel veel voorkwam in het dorp maar, omdat de inwoners daar eertijds niet erg snugger waren. De schimpnaam Uilen wordt nog vaak gebruikt in Hurwenen en omstreken. Zo heet de plaatselijke toneelvereniging De Hurnse Uylen."
Tegenwoordig wordt de schimpnaam niet meer als zodanig gezien en zijn de 'Hurnsen' trots op hun bijnaam.

The inhabitants of Hurwenen (popularly known as Hurne) are called 'Hurnsche Owls'. Not particularly flattering if you know the explanation.
The book Schimpnamen in Gelderland states the following:
“For example, the inhabitants of Hurwenen are also known as Uilen (Owls). Not because that bird was common in the village but because the inhabitants were not very bright in those days. Uil (owl) is a Dutch insult for a person who is not very bright. The nickname Uilen is still often used in Hurwenen and its surroundings. For example, the local theater association is called De Hurnse Uylen.”
Nowadays, the taunt name is no longer seen as such and the “Hurnsen” are proud of their nickname.
