Gymnastics

Welcome to the Olympic gymnasium, where strength and artistry defy gravity's pull. This Gymnastics cache belongs to the Geocaching Summer Olympics Series. Some fun facts about this sport in the Olympics:

  • Gymnastics events have been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.
  • For 32 years, only men were allowed to compete. Beginning at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, women were allowed to compete in artistic gymnastics events as well.
  • Events in men’s gymnastics include floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar, and combined (individual and team). Women’s artistic events include floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and combined (individual and team).

  • Rhythmic gymnastics became an Olympic sport practiced only by women in 1984. Events in women’s gymnastics include rope, hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon, with awards based on team, group, all-around, and individual competitions.

  • Trampoline gymnastics was first introduced at the 2000 Olympic Games as both a men’s and women’s individual event.

The cache can be found at N 46° 49.E W 96° 45.F.

Start by determining the correct gymnastics floor routine using the following information:

  • Movements:
    • Handstand
    • Cartwheel
    • Tumble
    • Flip
    • Backflip
    • Handspring
  • Rules:
    • A cartwheel cannot come first.
    • Never start or end a routine with a handspring.
    • A handstand should always be in the exact middle.
    • Always precede and follow a flip with handstands.
    • A handstand is the only move you can transition into a handspring.
    • A tumble always follows a cartwheel.
    • Only one move can be used twice.
    • A handstand is the only move that can directly follow a backflip.
    • A cartwheel cannot come before a the backflip or flip occurs.

Once you have your proper order of moves, extract the following letters from each word to receive a keyword: 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 6. Convert that keyword to it's word value which gives you 'AB.'

Next, the athlete has moved onto their vault routine and the judges need help determining their score. Using the following judges marks and given example, add the movements and then AB, and you will receive your coordinates.

Example:

For this puzzle, always refer to the number on the left, so, in this instance, the answer for this movement would be 4.41. To make the number useable for our purposes, convert it to a whole number by moving the decimal two places. For this example, your answer would be 441.

To clarify, 'X' and 'Y' are arbitrary letters. They just signify that you need to combine the two movements, and I apologize for any confusion. X will refer to E, and Y will refer to F.
