
Welcome to this Cache - The sister cache to St Paul's without the walls which can be found here and takes you through a nice stroll taking in the St Augustine's Abbey.

You are looking for a small magnetic capsule which is hidden just on the outside of the church. I do however encourage you to take in the beautiful surroundings that is St Martin's Church.
Here are some fun facts about the church that might one day help you in a pub quiz!
1. The most amazing fact about this church is that it is the oldest existing parish church in the English speaking world having been built in AD 597.
2. This church is a UNESCO world Heritage Site alongside Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey
3. St Martin's was the private chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent before Saint Augustine of Canterbury arrived from rome in 597. Queen Bertha was married to King Ethelbert, who was a pagan. He allowed his beloved wife to practice her christian faith by renovating a Romano-British building!

4. The church was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, a city located near where Queen Bertha grew up.
5. The graveyard contains the graves of many notable local families. Canon William Cadman (19th Century Evangelist) , Thomas Sidney Cooper (artist) , Mary Tourtel (the creator of Rupert Bear)
6. The St Martin's Chrismatory - Set in an area of the North Wall of the nave is a small box made of copper alloy. It is a replica of a 14th Century chrismatory found in 1849. The original is now on display in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral, it is thought to be the oldest in England! A chrismatory is a container for holy oils.
