A Wherigo uses GPS technology to guide you to physical locations and interact with virtual objects and/or characters. Wherigo has a physical container like a traditional cache and immerse you in a unique experience, which can give you a richer experience while on a geocache hunt. It is a true treasure hunt.
The Wherigo Geocache was first conceived by Groundspeak founders Jeremy Irish and Elias Alvord as a way to integrate video games into a geocaching experience.
Type of Wherigo Cartridges
There are three types of Wherigo cartridges:
1) Play at CO chosen location
2) Play Anywhere - No specific location
• Play at your chosen location, i.e. football/soccer field (Battleship)
• Has nothing to do with your location (Hangman series)
3) Reverse Wherigo - 3 sets of 6-digit numbers
Difference between Wherigo, Multi Cache, Letterbox and Adventure Lab
Wherigo/Multi/Letterbox Hybrid
• May have any amount of zones/stages, but normally more than 1
• Each zone does not count has a find
• D/T between 1-5, set by the CO
• Finds count similar to any Geocache which counts for Counties, States or Countries stats
• After Wherigo cartridge is downloaded, you do not need cellular data to play
Adventure Lab
• 5 stages or fewer, but may be granted up to 10 stages
• Each stage counts as a find
• No D/T, therefore does not affect Fizzy stats
• Finds do not count for Counties, States or Countries stats
• AL requires cellular data to play each stage
• Most challenge caches do not accept AL
