Willkommen auf Kokerei Hansa, wo sich Natur und Industriekultur treffen. Die Kokerei Hansa wird 1928 von den Vereinigten Stahlwerken, dem damals größten Stahlkonzern Europas gebaut. Hansa ist eine moderne Zentralkokerei. Das heißt, dass sie die Kohle von der benachbarten Zeche Hansa und von anderen Bergwerken der Vereinigten Stahlwerke zu Koks verarbeitet.
Kohle wird in den luftdichten Öfen der Kokerei 20 Stunden auf über 1000°C erhitzt. Dabei entweichen Schwefel und alle anderen stören Stoffe aus der Kohle. Übrig bleibt nahezu reiner Kohlenstoff. Damit wird in den Hochöfen Eisenerz zu Eisen verhüttet.
Die Stoffe, die dabei übrigbleiben, die Kohlenwertstoffe, werden auf der weißen Seite der Kokerei zu Düngemitteln, Treibstoff und Grundstoffen für die chemische Industrie verarbeitet.
1938 wird Hansa massiv erweitert. Kohle und Stahl werden für die Rüstungsproduktion benötigt. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wird Hansa weiter ausgebaut. Erst 1992 geht die Kokerei außer Betrieb und wird durch die neue, modernere Kokerei Kaiserstuhl ersetzt. 1999 wird Hansa unter Denkmalschutz gestellt und öffentlich zugänglich gemacht.
Heute ist die Kokerei Hansa mit dem Schacht III der Zeche Hansa einmaliges Industriedenkmal. Im Salzlager finden Kulturveranstaltungen statt, in der Gastiefkühlanlage begrüßt ein Café und Restaurant seine Gäste. Kohlebunker und Ofenbatterien sind in Führungen zugänglich. Die Natur hat einen großen Teil des Geländes zurückerobert. Darum wird Hansa einer der Leuchttürme der Internationalen Gartenbauausstellung 2027 sein.
Den Cache findet ihr auf dem Kokereigelände. Das ist von Mittwoch bis Sonntag von 10-18 Uhr kostenfrei zugänglich.

Welcome to Hansa coking plant, where nature and industrial culture meet. The Hansa coking plant was built in 1928 by Vereinigte Stahlwerke, the largest steel group in Europe at the time. Hansa is a modern central coking plant. This means that it processes coal from the neighbouring Hansa colliery and other mines belonging to Vereinigte Stahlwerke into coke.
Coal is heated to over 1000°C for 20 hours in the coking plant's airtight ovens. Sulphur and all other disruptive substances are removed from the coal. What remains is almost pure carbon. This is used to smelt iron ore into iron in the blast furnaces.
The substances that remain, the coal recyclables, are processed on the white side of the coking plant into fertilisers, fuel and basic materials for the chemical industry.
Hansa is massively expanded in 1938. Coal and steel are needed for armaments production. Hansa is further expanded after the Second World War. It is not until 1992 that the coking plant is decommissioned and replaced by the new, more modern Kaiserstuhl coking plant. In 1999, Hansa was placed under a preservation order and opened to the public.
Today, the Hansa coking plant with Shaft III of the Hansa colliery is a unique industrial monument. Cultural events take place in the salt store, while a café and restaurant welcome guests in the gas deep-freeze plant. Coal bunkers and furnace batteries are accessible on guided tours. Nature has reclaimed a large part of the site. This is why Hansa will be one of the beacons of the 2027 International Horticultural Exhibition.
