Congrats to bobbyleggo and Mr Caravan for FTF!
The Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway existed mainly to serve the various collieries and quarries in the area and opened in 1882. It was a branch line between the Kelvin Railway to Glasgow and the Denny Branch operated by the Caledonian Railway to Falkirk. There wasn't much passenger traffic on this railway and the last passenger train ran in 1935, whilst the line closed for good in 1964.
There is still evidence of this railway to be found, such as the walled embankment you are now looking at. From what I can see on the old maps, there was never a bridge here so the wall must have been built to hold back the embankment when the path was put in. The line used to run through where the bonded warehouses now stand behind you.
If you follow the top path throught the nature reserve that pretty much follows the route of the railway to what was Bonnybridge Central Station (where you will find a further geocache in this series). The footprint of the station has barely changed and you can clearly see where the track used to be, well worth a visit after this cache.
