IMPORTANT: You do NOT need to search the centre island or the fountain itself. I have placed the cache away from the roundabout island. If you wish to visit and inspect the fountain, do so at your own risk.
A hidden piece of Brisbane’s history hides away in the middle of this bustling intersection. A blink and you’ll miss it monument to the past.
Originally commissioned in 1939 and built in 1949, two fountains were built to stand alongside the commemorative statue of King George V (which still stands in front of City Hall today).

In 1967, work began on the upgrade of King George Square. This included raising the square, building the underground carpark, cessing all motor traffic along Albert Street between Ann and Adelaide Streets, the relocation of the King George V Memorial and the removal of the two fountains to be replaced by the now much more popular and well-known fountain from the 1970’s. Work was completed in 1975.
One of the two fountains was reconstructed on the Preston Road roundabout and unfortunately goes largely unnoticed by passing traffic and the largely non-existent pedestrian traffic. In placing this cache, I hope to bring people’s attention back to this beautifully sculptured 75 year old landmark.
This is a highly busy area so be extra vigilent to avoid the attention of muggles or you could visit at night to avoid those pesky observers but the fountain may be harder to see! Please make sure we sign the logbook. No pen/pencil is provided. Enjoy!
