NORTH VANCOUVER PUBLIC ART 13 - THE LYNNMOUR MULTI-CACHE TRILOGY:

(GCAM4MW, GCARY2F, and GCARY6G)

 

Public Art presents to you a trilogy of multi-caches that can be found in & around the Lynnmour neighbourhood. These multi-caches are all accessible by vehicle, on foot, or by bicycle. However, please do your geocaching safely, and therefore do not park or stop on Highway 1 or any of its access ramps, or cross any of those vehicle routes anywhere that is unsafe. It is not necessary to put yourself in any danger, as all the geocache locations are in accessible areas only, and safe parking areas and pedestrian & bicycle pathways are indicated by the cache waypoints.

 

The name Lynnmour is taken from Lynn Creek and the Seymour River, because this area lies in between them. The neighbourhood name usually only refers to the lowlands, close to where both streams drain into Burrard Inlet. In pre-colonial history, the area was part of the traditional terrirory of the Squamish ( Sḵwx̱wú7mesh ), Tsleil-Waututh ( səlilwətaɬ ), and Musqueam ( xʷməθkʷəy̓əm ) first nations. Today, the area is heavily developed, and perhaps the most crucial area for transportation infrastructure within all of North Vancouver. It is a place where arterial roads from central North Vancouver, Lynn Valley, and the Seymour areas all come together, and funnel traffic to and from Highway 1, and the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge located further south at Second Narrows. Between 2016 and 2022, there was a massive modernization project that rebuilt several bridges, overpasses, and highway ramps. Today it is a more modern interchange complex than the previous configuration, and a lot of additional work was also done to improve the other aspects of the area's accessibility, with bike and pedestrian pathways all around it and even allowing non-vehicular traffic to cross safely underneath the highway. There are several popular parks and walking trails around the edges of the interchange complex. Last but certainly not least, there are several pieces of public artwork that were added to the Lynnmour neighbourhood to imporve the aesthetic qualities of the area which is otherwise defined by its critical public infrastructure.

 

MERGE:

 

On the north side of Highway 1, a noise berm divides a major on & off ramp from Old Lillooet Road & a section of East Keith Road. Merge is an art project by artist Rebecca Beyer, that turns this 4 metre tall and 356 metre long soundwall into a colourful mural. The wall is made up of 90 columns of layered aluminum panels, which have been painted according to a specfic colour scheme. On the north side of this soundwall, facing east Keith Road and the sidewalk / bicycle path, some of the panels have also been painted with the names of various flora, fauna, and landmarks that exist within North Vancouver. There is also a plaque with photographs of the same items, which also explains the artwork in greater detail - the posted coordinates of this geocache are located at that sign. The sign and the north side of the soundwall are where you will have to go to solve this cache, so do not try to access it by parking or walking on the highway or its on-ramps. Approach from east Keith Road, and there is even street parking here, as indicated by a waypoint.

 

 

SOLVING THIS CACHE:

 

The Merge soundwall lists 20 kinds of North Vancouver landmarks, flora, and fauna, and the sign at the posted coordinates lists these same ones in a different order. You will be given the relative order of certain named items on the wall, from east to west, and each will correspond to certain missing coordinate clues (clues from A to J). You then need to match the names you find at those locations to the positions of photographs you find for those items on the Merge sign (at the posted coordinates). The position of each item photograph will tell you what number matches the clue you are looking for. Once you match up all of these, you can apply the number for each clue to find the final coordinates of the geocache, according to the coordinates formula given below.

 

Helpful tips: You may want to have some sort of note pad or app for this process, to write down the names you find and what clue they are for. Also, since you will be walking along the long soundwall looking at names, if you begin by taking a photo of the Merge interpretive sign at the posted coordinates, you can carry that image with you to look at when convenient, instead of having to return to the sign to determine the numbers. As well, there may be some vegetation that obscures the view of some clues from the sidewalk; sorry about that, but aftr the cache was published, district parks staff designated the open area a "pollinator meadow", which means no trimming will take place, so you might have to step carefully over a few plants to view some clues.

A checksum has been provided in the Hint so you can confirm you final answer. As the area can result in less accurate GPS readings, use the hint when near the hide location for better accuracy, then let your geosenses guide your search. The cache can be found in easy reach of the trail, and is not located in any place where you should not go.

 

The cache is a small preform container, but with micro holding capacity. Please be stealthy when accessing the cache and putting it back; please put the cache back in exactly the same way it was found.

 

It will a bit more of a walk to get there compared to the other two caches in the series, but not difficult terrain. If you have mobility problems, you may find that there is a closer parking which you can drive to, by looking on a map of the area.
