GEO X WORDS Mystery Cache

Suomeksi alla, ristikko on englanniksi, mutta siinä on myös suomeksi vihjeitä. 

🇬🇧: This mystery is an ode to the New York Times crossword. The NYT crossword is probably one of the most famous crosswords in the world, and it's format is something of a gold standard for crosswords in the US. 

Some notable characteristics of it are: 

• Grids must have rotational symmetry
• No square can go unchecked (a square is always part of at least two words)
• Crosswords are generally built around a coherent theme, generally worldplay or a gimmick
• The crossword gets harder every day of the week, with Thursday often being weird, and Sunday extra large (this puzzle is Monday-Tuesday difficulty)

The crosswords also have a rather strict format for clues, which Wikipedia lays out well. Let me know if there's mistakes or you have suggestions for improvements. Some clues are also in Finnish, if the answer makes sense in Finnish. This is generally with words with double meanings in both languages! 

Having strict rules means that very cool rule breaking can happen. A square can, for instance, have a rebus, which means that the square has a word, or more than one letters in it. For instance this puzzle had playing cards as rebuses, crossing King of Clubs like so: NETWOR(KING)EVENT x (CLUB)MED. 

No funny business in this crossword though, one letter per square :) 

🇫🇮 New York Timesin ristikko on todennäköisesti maailman tunnetuimpia, ja sen formaatti on Yhdysvalloissa eräänlainen kultastandardi ristikoille. 

Formaatti eroaa suomalaisista ristikoista muutamalla tavalla: 

• Ruudukot ovat liki aina kiertosymmetrisiä 
• Ristikoissa ei saa ikinä olla ruutua, joka ei ole ristiin kahden eri sanan kanssa
• Ristikot sisältävät toki erisnimiä ja yleistietoa, mutta niissä on vahva sanaleikin kulttuuri
• Ristikossa on yleensä sanaleikkiin liittyvä teema, mikä toistuu ristikon teemavastauksissa. 
• Ristikko on viikon jokaisena päivänä vähän vaikeampi. Torstaisin on erikoisia ristikoita (kuten alla), ja sunnuntairistikko on merkittävästi suurempi. Tämä ristikko on maanantai/tiistai -tasoa. 

Ristikoissa on myös tarkat vihjeformaatit. Tarkat säännöt sallivat sen, että niitä voi myös rikkoa, jos se sopii teemaan. Yhdessä ruudussa voi esimerkiksi olla enemmän kuin yksi kirjain, kokonainen sana tai melkein mitä vain (Rebus). Tässä ristikossa oli esimerkiksi pelikortteja ruuduissa, jolloin yhdessä ruudussa oleva ristikuningas ilmeni näin: NE(TWO)R(KING)EVENT ja (CLUB)MED. Tässä ristikossa ei kuitenkaan ole mitään erityisen sääntöjä-rikkovaa. 

Minua on aina harmittanut tämän henkisen ristikon puuttuminen suomeksi. Voi olla että puute juontaa siitä, että niiden rakentaminen on vaikeampaa, tai ihan vain suomen kielen oikuista. Olen halunnut pitkään rakentaa suomeksi NYT henkisen ristikon, tai jopa rebus ristikon. Se saattaisi olla ensimmäinen laatuaan, ja ehkä sellainen nähdään vielä jos tästä pidetään!

Cheating

Crosswords are meant to be fun, so solve it how you want! Here are some tips if you want to cheat: 

• Google names or information you don't know (add -crossword to the end of your search if you don't want crossword specific results)
• Use a thesaurus
• Use a clue searching website
