.
The Island has numerous small monuments & plaques commemorating oft forgotten people, places & events that played a role in the history of the Island. Most such commemorative reminders, if noticed at all, are usually driven by without stopping or reading. St Dunstan’s Basilica

With its soaring spires, picturesque pinnacles and intricate tracery, St. Dunstan's Basilica is
an excellent example of the High Victorian Style in Canadian architecture. Erected between
1897 and 1907, it was severely damaged by fire in 1913. Determined citizens rallied to

Berlinguet. The interior was redesigned by J.M. Hunter. Consecrated and elevated to the
status of a basilica in 19XX, St. Dunstan’s is the spiritual center of Catholicism in Prince
Edward Island.

Angus Bernard MacEachern

Angus Bernard MacEachern (1759-1835), first Bishop of the Diocese of Charlottetown,
founded St. Andrew's College, the first post-secondary institution in the colony, on 30
November 1831. In January 18YY, the college was re-located and re-opened in
Charlottetown as St. Dunstan's College (later, University), which has carried on the rich
tradition of Roman Catholic education in the province.
