Geocache Description:

Pratt Balcony - The Top

Welcome to the Pratt Balcony Adventure! This hidden gem offers a rewarding hike with stunning views, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. The trail is in great shape, thanks to some mystery trail maintainers, and is well-constructed though unmaintained and unofficial. Whether it’s a lost trail or an old logging road, it’s a beautiful hike worth exploring.

Starting Point:

Finding the trailhead can be a bit tricky. It’s unmarked and somewhat hidden around a curve of Middle Fork Road. Approximately 9.80 miles from the junction of 468th St. and Middle Fork Road, look for two signs on the right warning of upcoming gravel patches. These signs are remnants from a road washout in early 2020 and may be temporary. The trailhead and a gravel pull-out that accommodates several vehicles are across the road between the two signs. If the signs are gone, this is the only defined parking on the left in the area. If you reach the big dips in the road, you’ve gone too far, and if you get to Oxbow parking, you haven't gone far enough.

Trail Details:

From the small parking lot, the trail (CCC Upper) heads to your left down the CCC. About a half-mile in, there is a small split to the right, just before the creek (which is often dry in late summer, appearing as a boulder field). This split takes you onto an old mossy "road". The moss-covered "road" eventually curves right and becomes an easier trail. While the trail is somewhat easy to follow, be sure to look for boot prints, cut trees, or slight indentations in the pine needles to keep you on the right path.

When you reach a fork in the trail, take the left path on the way up, which follows the creek. This section has loose, ankle-busting rocks and isn’t the most comfortable. On your way back, take the right fork for a smoother descent. This path is slightly longer but much easier on the feet. Explore the social trails to West Bessemer Creek; it’s worth the detour.

Once the forks reunite, the trail moves away from the creek and levels out in a marshy area. Expect to get your shoes muddy here. After a short hump, you’ll arrive at Pratt Balcony.

The View:

Prepare for a breathtaking view! Pratt Balcony offers a stunning panorama of the Pratt River valley and Russian Butte, with the Middle Fork valley stretching out below and snowy Central Cascades peaks in the distance. You’ll also see Mt. Garfield, Mailbox Peak, and more. There’s a spot to sit and even an old grill if you want to cook some food. Take care not to get lost on your return trip, as the trail can be less obvious on the way down.

Flora and Fauna:

Depending on the season, you might find green salmonberries, blooming blackberries, and various wildflowers. Buttercups are plentiful, and while there are a few bugs, they’re more of an annoyance than a real problem.

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: 2.5 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 550 feet
  • Estimated Time: 50 minutes up, 30 minutes down

Notes:

  • Bring hiking poles if you plan to cross West Bessemer Creek via the CCC Trail.
  • Pack out all trash, including any remnants of the semi-permanent barbecue.
  • On the way down, there are some forks and splits to explore. Be sure to have a map and be good at following directions, as the trails can get faint, but they generally return to the main trail.
  • Enjoy the hike and the incredible views!

Happy caching! 🥾🌲
