Willkommen beim Hohenhof! Du hast dich nicht verlaufen, auch wenn dieser Ort auf den ersten Blick nicht nach Industriekultur aussieht. Der Hohenhof ist das Zentrum der Künstlerkolonie Hohenhagen und Wohnhaus ihres Gründers Karl Ernst Osthaus. Der Bankierssohn setzt sich Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zum Ziel Kunst und Kultur ins triste Ruhrgebiet zu bringen. Damit will er das Leben aller Menschen in der Region verbessern. Er nennt sein Konzept „Folkwang“.
Der Hohenhof wird zwischen 1906 und 1908 gebaut. Der Stararchitekt Henry van de Velde arbeitet beim Bau der Jugendstil-Villa mit verschiedenen Künstlern zusammen, die Teile des Gebäudes gestalten. Der Hohenhof gilt deshalb als Gesamtkunstwerk des Jugendstils. Beim Bau der Künstlerkolonie kann Osthaus allerdings seine Visionen nur zum Teil umsetzen.
Osthaus eröffnet im Hohenhof eine Schule. In den Jahren nach seinem Tod 1921 wird sein früheres Wohnhaus zu verschiedenen Zwecken genutzt – unter anderem als Weberei und als Lazarett. Die Nationalsozialisten richten im Hohenhof eine Schule ein, um ihre menschenverachtende Ideologie an eine neue Führergeneration weiterzugeben.
Zuletzt hat die Pädagogische Hochschule Hagen ihren Sitz im Hohenhof. Danach wird er wieder als Kunstwerk zugänglich. Heute ist der Hohenhof eine Außenstelle des Osthaus Museums Hagen. Der Garten wird zurzeit nach historischem Vorbild wiederhergestellt und wird Teil der Internationalen Gartenausstellung 2027.

Welcome to Hohenhof! You haven't lost your way, even if this place doesn't look like industrial heritage at first glance. Hohenhof is the centre of the Hohenhagen artists' colony and the home of its founder Karl Ernst Osthaus. At the beginning of the 20th century, the banker's son sets himself the goal of bringing art and culture to the dreary Ruhr region. His aim is to improve the lives of everyone in the region. He calls his concept "Folkwang".
The Hohenhof is built between 1906 and 1908. Star architect Henry van de Velde works with various artists to design parts of the building during the construction of the Art Nouveau villa. The Hohenhof is therefore regarded as a Gesamtkunstwerk of Art Nouveau. However, Osthaus is only able to partially realise his vision when building the artists' colony.
Osthaus opens a school in the Hohenhof. In the years following his death in 1921, his former homeias used for various purposes, including as a weaving mill and a hospital. The National Socialists set up a school in Hohenhof to pass on their inhuman ideology to a new generation of leaders.
Finally, the Hagen College of Education is located in the Hohenhof. It then becomes accessible again as a work of art. Today, the Hohenhof is a branch of the Osthaus Museum Hagen. The garden is currently being restored to its historical model and will be part of the 2027 International Garden Exhibition.
