TOL 023 - Fenrisulven

English:
Fenrir, also known as Fenrisulven, is a fearsome giant wolf and one of Loki and Angerboda’s offspring. Fenrir was cast into the sea by Odin, where he grew so large that he could encircle the entire world and bite his own tail. He is prophesied to play a central role in Ragnarok, the end of the world, where he will break free and kill Odin.

To prevent this catastrophe, the gods attempted to bind Fenrir with several chains, but he broke free from all of them. Realizing they needed a solution that was both unseen and unbeatable, they turned to the dwarves to forge a chain. The result was Gleipnir, a magical chain made from six impossible elements: the sound of a cat’s footsteps, women’s quarrels, a bear’s beard, a bird’s spittle, a fish’s breath, and a woman’s sinews. Despite its unusual lightness and softness, Gleipnir was incredibly strong and unbreakable.

The gods used trickery to get Fenrir to agree to be bound by Gleipnir. They offered him the chain as a gesture of trust, with one of the gods, Tyr, placing his hand in the wolf’s mouth as a sign of honor. When Fenrir realized he had been deceived and that Gleipnir was unbreakable, he bit off Tyr’s hand in retaliation. Gleipnir remains on Fenrir until Ragnarok, when the wolf will break free and join the final battle against the gods.
