Thelma Griffith Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

FreddieTheBoss: After reading many concerned logs about the proximity to nearby houses and playground, I have removed the cache. Originally I just thought it was a lovely little park but didn't think past that much, so I apologize.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to Thelma Griffith Park!

A small community park in the South Wellington area, otherwise known simply as south Nanaimo. The park has play equipment for kids, lots of area for picnics, and dogs are permitted. This cache is placed in the far corner of the park, hanging low. Watch for muggles and please hide the cache back well! There is also a small FTF prize....

Here's some history:

Thelma Griffith moved to South Wellington with her family in 1932 when she was in her late teens. She worked at the post office in Anderson's store, and later built and operated her own store in the 1950's after the Anderson's store burnt down. Thelma ran the community post office in the corner of her store. She was an active community member, participating in many organizations including the original fire department and the purchase of South Wellington's first fire truck, the local Ratepayers's Association, and the local church. Thelma served as a trustee with the South Wellington Fire Protection District and was elected as Area A Director RDN in the late 1960's. In the late 1970's, she was involved with the South Wellington Recreation Commission and was interested in a property for a park.

When she retired, in 1977, she received a certificate from the Government of Canada, thanking her for her years of service at the South Wellington post office. The whole community gave her a retirement celebration! Her devotion to the community and desire to create a park was honoured in 1987 with the dedication of this park on Minto Avenue, in her name.

This park was originally in Provincial Crown Land, the property was the transferred to the Regional District of Nanaimo in 2006. The park officially opened in 2009 after it received a community-driven face lift, including new play equipment.
