Sangsvanen er på størrelse med knopsvanen og kendes bedst fra denne på sit gule næb, der mangler knopsvanens sorte knop. Den holder halsen mere rank end knopsvanen, og så har den en meget kraftig, klangfuld stemme, der ofte høres, næsten som en trompeteren.
I vinterhalvåret er sangsvanen en ret almindelig fugl i Danmark. Den ses f.eks. flokvis på marker eller i udkanten af flokke af knopsvaner på lavvandede arealer.
Sangsvanen trives primært i vådområder, søer, floder og moser. Den foretrækker steder med rigelig vegetation og adgang til føde som vandplanter og græs samt vinterafgrøder som f.eks. hvede og raps.
Danmark er sammen med Tyskland det vigtigste overvintringsområde for arten i Europa.
