Frægasti íbúinn á Austurlandi er án efa Lagarfljótsormurinn, vatnaskrímsli sem er talið að lifi í Lagarfljóti. Það er svolítið erfit að skilgreina Lagarfljót, hvort hér sé um straumvatn eða stöðuvatn að ræða, en líta má á það sem röð af vötnum sem fljót rennur í gegn. Efsta vatnið, Lögurinn, er um 53 km2 að stærð og allt að 112 m djúpt og var grafið af ísaldarjöklum.

The most famous inhabitant in the East of Iceland is undoubtedly the Wyrm of Lagarfljót, a sea monster which is believed to live in Lagarfljót. It's quite difficult to define whether Lagarfljót is a river or a lake but one may look at it as a row of lakes that a river runs through. The uppermost lake, Lögurinn, is about 53 km2 and up to 112 m deep and it was carved by the Ice Age glaciers.
Á botni vatnsins hvílir þykkt leirlag sem hefur borist inn í það með jökulám – Jökulsá í Fljótsdal (sem á upptök sín úr Eyjabakkajökli) og líka, eftir tilkomu Kárahnjúkavirkjunar, Jökulsá í Dal (sem á upptök sín úr Brúarjökli). Gruggugt yfirbragð Fljótsins ásamt undarlegu gasuppstreymi á sumum stöðum næra svo sannarlega ímyndunaraflið þannig að ýmsar sögur og kenningar um dularfullar verur í Fljótinu fóru snemma á kreik, meðal annars sagan um Lagarfljótsorminn. Samkvæmt heimildum sást til hans í fyrsta skipti á 14. öld en hann hefur birst fólki reglulega síðan þess, jafnvel nýlega, á 21. öld. Á netinu má meira að segja finna nokkur myndbönd sem fanga óvenjulegar hreyfingar í vatninu.

At the bottom of the lake, there is a thick layer of clay that has been carried there by glacial rivers - Jökulsá í Fljótsdal (that originates in the Eyjabakkajökull glacier) and also, after the Kárahnjúkar Dam was built, Jökulsá í Dal (that originates from the Brúarjökull glacier). The muddy appearance of Lagarfljót together with strange movements of natural gas here and there certainly nurture one's imagination and therefore, all kinds of stories and theories about mysterious creatures started to emerge, including the story about the Wyrm of Lagarfljót. According to the sources, it was spotted for the first time in the 14th century and has been sighted regularly since then, moreover recently, in the 21st century. This multi-cache will give you an opportunity to get to know the folktale about the Wyrm of Lagarfljót. Our adventure starts at the beautiful Atlavík campsite in the Hallormsstaðaskógur Forest. The GPS coordinates will lead you to a spot with two signs: on the bigger one, you can read the story about the Wyrm, the smaller one will give you a hint to find the next stop. How many red triangles can you see on that little sign?
