Geocache Description:

WILDLIFE PARADISE IN SASKATCHEWAN

The Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area (NWA) is one of 54 National Wildlife Areas across Canada managed by Environment and Climate Change Canada. In 1887, Last Mountain Lake Bird Sanctuary was established to protect essential habitats for waterfowl, making it the first and oldest protected area for wildlife in Canada and all North America. This cache is in a location that provides a wonderful view of the northern islands and peninsulas of Last Mountain Lake that were identified and set aside as an important breeding ground and migratory stopover for numerous species of birds.

A century later, the Last Mountain Lake NWA was established to protect and conserve wildlife and habitats surrounding the Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Located in the heart of the central flyway of North America, Last Mountain Lake NWA encompasses the northern end of one of the most productive lakes in southern Saskatchewan. During migration season, up to 900,000 geese, 50,000 Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis), and hundreds of thousands of ducks can be observed onsite. Last Mountain Lake NWA hosts more than 300 bird species, including a number of species at risk such as the endangered Piping Plover (Charidus melodus circumcinctus) and Whooping Crane (Grus americana). Because of its ecological and historical value, Last Mountain Lake NWA is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA), a National Historic Site (NHS), a Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) site of national importance, and a Ramsar Wetland.

Learn more about protecting and conserving natural areas by visiting Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area. The NWA is open to the public during daylight hours.  Driving and cycling on the gravel roads is welcome. Hiking is encouraged on designated interpretive trails and boardwalks.
