Two birds that can be confused are the Whooping Crane (Grus americana) pictured on the left, and the Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) pictured on the right. These cranes share similar habitats but once studied, their differences become apparent.
Keep your eyes open! At this location, one of these birds is especially large and not the best at hiding, almost as if it was meant to be found and looked at.... can you identify if it is a Whooping Crane or Sandhill Crane?
Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area attracts more than 300 species of birds. To the untrained eye, some birds look very similar. Visual features such as size and shape, colour pattern, behaviour, and habitat will help identify birds (check out our bird ID activity under the picnic site in the black chest!).
Learn more about protecting and conserving natural areas by visiting Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area. The NWA is open to the public during daylight hours. Driving and cycling on the gravel roads is welcome. Hiking is encouraged on designated interpretive trails and boardwalks.
