Geocache Description:

Hourglasses - beautiful but fleeting

DESCRIPTION EN LANGUE FRANÇAISE

DESCRIPTION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This EarthCache describes the formation of bizarre hourglasses on the west coast of the island of Djerba as a result of marine erosion. The following questions must be answered:

1) Can you find very many or only a few hourglasses near the coordinates? What is the approximate diameter of the largest hourglass?
2) Will new hourglasses appear and old ones disappear in the future? Give reasons for your decision!

Please send me your answers by e-mail or Message Center. Immediately afterwards you can log this EarthCache as FOUND IT. An on-site photo of yourself or a personal item is mandatory. Please add this photo to your log!

The waves of the Mediterranean Sea erode the sandstone and limestone deposited during the Pleistocene on the west coast of Djerba through permanent erosion. The marine erosion known as abrasion attacks the island on a broad front through its grinding and levelling effect. Surf caves and smaller and larger rock cavities form, which collapse over time. Metre-high cliffs form along the coastline.

On the one hand, the mechanical erosion caused by the impacting and abrasive surf debris is effective, and on the other hand, the air contained in the rock fissures is compressed. The resulting compressive forces also disrupt the rock formation. Erosion is further intensified by dissolution and hydrolysis as well as by the constant alternation of over-washing and exposure to air.

One of the most remarkable forms of erosion are the hourglasses in the sometimes only superficially consolidated sandstones. They are caused by the increasing enlargement of neighbouring rock openings. Initially, the rear parts of both holes are connected. The rock is softest in this area. The rock crust in the front part is more resistant, so that a conical column is formed that resembles an hourglass. The pressure of the overlying rock acting from above favours the effect. While low pressures allow the rock to break up into individual grains, high pressure activates the interlocking of the structure, which significantly improves the resistance of the material.

BESCHREIBUNG IN DEUTSCHER SPRACHE

Direkt anschließend kannst du diesen EarthCache als FOUND IT loggen.
