SideTracked - Central Sydney

About SideTracked Caches
This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else attend too. More Information can be found on the SideTracked Series website at https://www.sidetrackedseries.info

This Community event is being held to celebrate 2 things, one being the Geocaching Community and the 2nd being Australia Day weekend.

SideTracked events are also fun and everyone is welcome to attend for however long you wish to spend here. A group photo will be taken at 4pm. This event is being held in Belmore Park, opposite the busy Central railway station. There will be a log sheet to sign.

Date: Monday 27th January 2025

Time 3pm - 5pm

Central Station is the terminus for some trains including the XPT services, the Indian Pacific and some local services. It also incorporates Central Metro Station and is well serviced by buses and the light rail.

The current Central Station was the 3rd station building, with others having been built in 1855 and 1874. It was opened in 1906 at an estimated cost of £610,000 and had 11 platforms. These were increased to 19 platforms by 1913. The 85.6 metre clock tower was added in 1921. Works to make the station more modern were done in 1955  and 1964, adding a booking hall and railway scene murals to the walls. Another program started in 1980 to improve the facilities and comfort of the passengers and the building was heritage listed in 1999. The new 11 metre long indicator board was installed in 2015. The Metro station was built under platforms 13 - 14, which were then demolished with the Metro platforms being fully opened in August 2024.
