We don't normally need an excuse to meet up for burgers and geo-chat...
but when a "once in a blue moon" opportunity arises, you have to take it!
The full moon on August 19th is the third Full Moon of an astronomical season that has four full moons and that happens to fall between the summer solstice and the fall equinox. That makes it a Blue Moon! We see the moon because of sunlight reflecting off its surface, and as it travels around our planet we see different amounts of its sunlit side. During a full moon, that means we are seeing the full sunlit face of the moon.
This will also be a "Supermoon" because the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in it's elliptical orbit. The technical name for this is Perigee-syzygy. There are a few supermoons every year (in fact there are three in a row this year) but a blue supermoon is rare. If you miss this one you wont have another shot until the end of February 2027! 
Did you know that it was once thought that if you slept out under a full moon you would go mad? This Lunar phenomenon is the root of the word Lunatic. 
History doesn't tell us anything about what happens if you eat burgers under a blue moon but we aim to find out!
