Geocache Description:

About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.

You can also add a badge to your profile (see mine here) which shows how many SideTracked caches you have found and what level you have reached.

The Station

The Alexandra railway line is a closed 14-kilometre branch railway line situated in Murrindindi Shire. Constructed by the Victorian Railways, it branches from the Mansfield line at Cathkin station, and runs east from the town of Cathkin to Alexandra. The line was primarily built to provide a general goods and passenger service to townships in the area.

The line was opened in 2 stages from September 1890 to October 1909, and closed in November 1978.  The branch was opened from Cathkin to Koriella station on 16 September 1890, and to the terminus at Alexandra on 28 October 1909.  The branch was closed in 1978, at the same time as the Mansfield line. The rail reserve is now part of the Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail.

Whilst timber remained the principal freight carried, Alexandra also became the railhead for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Rubicon power scheme.  In the 1920s, Alexandra became the railhead for materials used in the construction of the original Eildon Weir which was ready for use in 1927 and again when the weir was enlarged in the early 1950s.

The town of Alexandra was originally known as the Red Gate by early settlers and Red Gate Diggings by gold miners in late 1866. The Red Gate, situated on the banks of the Ultima Thule Creek, marked the break in the boundary fence between two pastoral runs.
