In Victorian times Sefton Park's Fairy Glen and the old Iron bridge was a popular meeting place for courting couples.
As the story goes, it was on this bridge that a couple named Oliver and Cathleen used to meet. Despite being from different class backgrounds, they were very much in love. One cold Valentines night, Oliver told Cathleen the devastating news that he was being forced into an arranged marriage. He begged her to meet him in 12 Months time on the bridge at 11pm and she agreed.
A year passed and Oliver stood eagerly awaiting Cathleen on the bridge. Alas, there was no sign of his love but suddenly she appeared at the far end. His heart leapt with joy and he ran to her with outstretched arms, but to his shock she passed right through him and vanished into the darkness.
He later discovered that Cathleen had died from Cholera the previous night. Her last words were "I must meet my love on the iron bridge".
The story continues that every Valentines eve at 11.15 pm both Oliver and Cathleen mysteriously appear and cross the bridge hand in hand...
