Geocache Description:

This is a very pretty small pond in Fryeburg. The road where the trail starts is not plowed in the winter (Porter Road).

Sometimes there is a not-so-nice smell at this pond. When I did a bit of research, this is what the State of Maine had to say, "Black Pond is a small, homothermous pond with poor water quality, which precludes any type of fisheries management. The pond water is very acidic and the bottom material emits hydrogen sulfide gas when disturbed. Biologists from MDIFW visited the pond in 1973 and observed large amounts of sawdust on the pond bottom, which is probably at least partially responsible for the poor water quality. Hornpout abundance was very low despite their ability to tolerate poor water quality conditions. The decaying sawdust may cause severe dissolved oxygen deficiencies and excess levels of hydrogen gas during the winter months, which may lead to winterkill."  I often google-research ponds that I plan to paddle on, and had never read a report like this!

The cache is on the way to the campsite near the shoreline. You do not need to step off of the trail.
