What are igneous rocks?
Igneous rocks are formed from the solidification of molten rock material, either magma or lava, which originates from deep within the Earth's mantle or from volcanic eruptions. There are two main types of igneous rocks: intrusive and extrusive.
1. Intrusive Igneous Rocks: These form when magma cools and solidifies beneath the Earth's surface. The slow cooling process allows large crystals to form. That is why intrusive rocks have a coarse-grained texture.
2. Extrusive Igneous Rocks: These form when lava cools and solidifies rapidly on the Earth's surface. The quick cooling process prevents large crystals from forming, resulting in fine-grained or glassy textures.
What is granite?
Granite is a kind of igneous rock. Granite is characterized by its coarse-grained texture, which results from the slow cooling of magma deep within the Earth's crust. It typically contains a mix of minerals, with quartz, feldspar, and mica being the most common. If a rock doesn't contain at least 20% of quartz, it is not considered as granite.
Quartz provides granite with its hardness and durability, making it resistant to scratches and heat. Feldspar gives granite its varied colors, ranging from pink and gray to black and white. Mica adds sparkle and texture to the rock.
Granite is widely used in construction and architecture due to its strength and aesthetic appeal. It's commonly used for kitchen countertops, flooring, monuments, and outdoor paving stones. Additionally, granite is also used in curbing, stair treads, and other landscaping applications due to its durability and resistance to weathering.
Why does granite have different colours?
Granite has different colours because variations in its mineral composition. The most common minerals found in granite are quartz, feldspar, and mica, but the exact proportions of these minerals can be different and the granite can contain other minerals as well.
Here is an overview of the colors commonly found in granite and the minerals responsible for those colors:
Pink: Pink colours in granite are often caused by the presence of potassium feldspar.
White: White granite typically contains a high percentage of quartz and feldspar.
Gray: Gray granite often contains a mix of minerals, including quartz, feldspar, and biotite mica. The overall combination and proportions of these minerals can create varying shades of gray.
Black: The presence of dark-colored minerals such as biotite or dark mica can give granite a black or dark gray color. These minerals are typically found in small quantities compared to quartz and feldspar.
Red: Red colours are often caused by the presence of iron oxide minerals such as hematite or magnetite as well as potassium feldspar. These minerals can give shades of red, rust, or brown to the granite.
Green: Green tones in granite can result from the presence of minerals like chlorite or epidote. These minerals may be present in small amounts and can give the granite a greenish hue.
Blue: Blue granite gets its colour from a high percentage of sodalite within the rock. However, blue granite is quite rare. Often, other blue rocks like larkvikite are sold as "blue granite".
